D3: Psychological Injuries in the Framework of WCB Disability Management

Psychological injuries present complex challenges and are often overshadowed by physical injuries within the framework of occupational disability management programs. Even though they are rarely a focus of an employer’s disability management program, psychological injuries are equally impactful on the individual’s well-being and the employer’s performance metrics. This presentation will offer insight into integrating psychological injury management into disability management programs.

Components of effective psychological injury management within disability management will be discussed, including the importance of prevention, and the Worker’s Compensation claim impacts. Attendees will learn how to navigate the complexities of managing psychological injuries within the framework of occupational disability management, including considerations related to reporting, recovery, and stigma.

Case studies will enhance the presentation to illustrate successful approaches for integrating psychological injury management into occupational disability management programs. The presentation aims to empower organizations to create occupational disability management programs that prioritize the physical as well as mental health and well-being of all employees.

Speaker Biographies

Kessie Stevens

Kessie has worked in the field of diversity and disabilities since 1999. Her experience working at the Workers’ Compensation Board of Alberta led her to found Artis. In addition to managing her organization, she develops courses with a specialization in diversity and inclusion and is a part-time instructor at the University of Calgary. She also has experience in public speaking and has been invited to speak at events and conferences around the world.

Kristal Vereschagin

Kristal Vereschagin is a seasoned health and safety professional with nearly a decade of expertise in Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) processes, including reporting, claim documentation, return-to-work planning, cost relief, and appeals. Her commitment to excellence is evident in her proficient navigation and application of WCB policies. During her tenure at Artis, Kristal has significantly reduced claim costs and improved employer experience ratings through her thorough understanding of WCB policies and proactive claims management. Her specialized skills in reviewing board decisions have consistently secured favorable outcomes for clients, reinforcing her role as a leader in the field of workers’ compensation.
